Character Name: Matthew Williams
Country: Canada/United States
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Staff or tourist: Tourist, though he tries to help out his brother Alfred with his duties when he can.
Likes:
*Hot chocolate – especially on cold evenings when he can stay indoors with a fire, usually with marshmallows and cinnamon.
*Maple syrup – his sweet tooth seems especially geared towards the sticky stuff, putting it on everything that is acceptable (because maple syrup hot dogs are perfectly normal).
*Freshly fallen snow – or snow that is currently falling, because it makes him feel like a little kid again, often running in it and making a fool of himself even in public.
*Snow-related sports like boarding, skiing and skating, hockey – Matthew has done plenty of this back home in Canada, but he likes the slopes of the resort especially much since it has so much more to offer.
*Fall leaves and pine trees – these things remind him of several childhood years spent with his family in their cabins up in the northern part of Canada, so he likes to immerse himself in those things that stir up those good feelings
Dislikes:
*Rude People – being fairly laidback himself, Matthew has a tendency to avoid people who are deliberately mean to others.
*Non-Hockey Fans – being quite an avid fan of the sport, the Canadian can’t fathom those who do not appreciate it as much as he does – and dislikes even more those who disparage the sport.
*Living in the United States – not that he hates the place, but he prefers his childhood home of Canada more, still considering himself a Canadian despite having had to re-settle when his family dynamic changed. He even wears clothes from that nation instead of anything American, just to irritate his brother.
*Excessive Rain – since rainfall always makes the snow melt too fast and increases the risk of him not being able to go outside and enjoy it. Matthew gets restless if he is stuck indoors for too long, preferring to be outside in the environment beyond the windows.
Personality:
Matthew is, at his core, a kind person at heart. Though he might sometimes seem distant from some people, it is only due to his naturally shy nature. Once he warms up to individuals he is an unfailing friend, prone to going out of his way to doing things if just to put a smile on their faces. Even to strangers he tries to maintain a polite demeanor though he will quickly excuse himself if their personalities are too intense since he is more awkward with handling those types of people. He prefers people who can appreciate the quiet times just as much as the fun ones.
Since gaining Alfred as his brother, he fluctuates between taking on the role of the younger and elder sibling. Matthew can get fiercely protective if he feels like someone might be taking advantage of his brother, though he also allows himself to get bossed around by Alfred or drawn into the other man’s grand schemes. It’s easy for him to get flustered in these situations, especially since so many people tend to mistake them for each other. Since Alfred naturally draws attention while Matthew maintains a low profile, getting attention paid to him often leaves the Canadian bewildered on how to conduct himself.
History:
(( Short description of their life so far. How did they end up here? ))
Matthew grew up in Canada with his parents, enjoying the life of being a single child right up until his mother passed away due to illness. His father relocated them to the United States, where Matthew’s father met Alfred’s mother, resulting in a marriage that combined their families together. It took some time for Matthew to adjust to the idea of having a brother and a new mother, having avoided making any real connection with them at first. Though after seeing his brother struggling at school with their peers teasing Alfred over his accent, Matthew quickly became his brother’s defender and even had to fight with a bully or two. He helped Alfred adjust to his new lifestyle in North America, though spent plenty of time quizzing his brother all about what life had been like back in Europe.
Being quite fond of his brother, Matthew has been coming to the resort for the past few years. It was there that he met Arthur for the first time, though the British boy intimidated him. Luckily, the Canadian succeeded in getting to know Arthur as well through Alfred, so despite the awkward arrangement of their family dynamics he feels like he has gained an additional brother as well. Despite only coming to the resort as a guest, Matthew often spent his time checking in on Arthur and Alfred, to make sure that they were doing well and to sneak them hot chocolate or warm food when they were overwhelmed with work, content just to hear about their day.
It was through getting involved in the work of the other two that he became a known regular by the staff members at the resort. A few of them still make the Canadian uncomfortable, causing him to turn flustered inexplicably. Normally he would avoid it by going out to enjoy something out on the slopes to keep occupied.

The digital alarm had not even gone off before Matthew threw off his blankets. From what he had heard of the forecast, there should have been several more inches of snow overnight. His snowboard had been taunting him for the past few days, propped up against his closet door. He had been restlessly waiting for the snow for the past week, though it had always just been unbearably cold but with no snowfall to speak of. Matthew pushed his feet into his slippers beside his bed, scrambling up in his flannel pajamas to rush over to the window of his bedroom.
Snow! Blessed, wonderful snow! Matthew nearly pressed his face to the window as he stared outside the glass with a beaming smile, ignoring the fact that his breath was fogging up the window and his glasses as well. For once the forecast had predicted the weather correctly! He snatched his robe up from where it lay across his bedside chair, throwing it on with a clumsy hurry as the young man rushed to grab up his snowboard from near the closet. Matthew shoved open his bedroom door with a gleeful grin.
It was only when he was halfway downstairs and nearly to the front door that his step-mother finally called after the Canadian to remind him of a very important fact. “Matthew! You can’t go outside in your pajamas!”
