Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me
I can feel the devil walking next to me
Character Name: Toris Laurinaitis
Country: Lithuania
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Staff or tourist: Staff
If staff, what job? Maid
Likes:
& Neatness - Toris loves neatness and organization in every aspect of his life. This makes being a maid the most natural option for a man needing a job that'll pay a decent wage for a student still in university. Years of practice mean that he can organize and clean the messiest of rooms in a speedy and proper manner. It relaxes him, and seeing a clean room after hours of work is a simple pleasure of his.
& Friends - Toris likes meeting people and making friends with them, that is, if he likes them. Sadly, he has the ability to attract the unsavoury type to him and doesn't quite know how to get rid of them without hurting their feelings - or hurting himself. But he will happily spend hours with people he likes, often doing what they want because that seems the best option.
& The Quiet - What could be better than the chance to relax and have a moment of peace?
& Fast Food - This is somewhat of a secret. Although he was raised on home made food, made first by his mother, then him, Toris enjoyed nothing more than going to the nearest fast food place, and ordering something thoroughly unhealthy and disgusting. It is a sickness. It developed during the brief time he was employed as a maid in an American household.
& A Certain Lady From Belarus - She is a lady he saw a few years ago, while working in Belarus. All he knows is that she is beautiful and he would give anything to see her again. Does this sound stalkerish? Not to him. Not to you too, hopefully! Toris is what you would call a hopeless romantic. This is romantic.
& Writing - Hopeless romantics have the tendency to do things. Things like writing literature in the hopes that one they will be discovered by an intelligent publisher and become famous. Perhaps win an award, like the Pulitzer. Not that he's that naive - this is just a fantasy. Toris likes writing fiction, but lately he has been researching his roots, and seeing if he can writing a family saga somewhat based on his family and their struggles. He can't write poetry, though, it almost always ends up really bad or hipster nonsense.
& Genealogy - Toris has been researching his family for ages, and has discovered several things over a long span of time. His mother's side can be traced to a bit after the Great Northern War, the records thankfully remaining intact despite the habit of the Soviet's to erase things they found unsuitable. He can find very little about his father, which makes him mad with curiosity about what his paternal ancestors did.
& Textbooks - Toris is perhaps the only person in the universe who enjoys reading textbooks for fun. It started when he was working as a maid in some doctor's household, their bookshelves filled with nothing but textbooks describing the various details of the human body. Toris started to read one one day, bored after cleaning the entire house, and found that it was perfectly fascinating. This makes studying easy for him.
& Gambling - This is a great weakness of his, and one that he will rarely admit to. Although he's bad at board games, Toris is wonderful at things like Blackjack and Poker. More than once, he has made an absolute fortune after a good evening of poker. Of course, he has lost plenty of times, but never dramatically. Losing any amount of money is a bad thing for him, since he likes keeping onto his money, but Toris decided the amount that he wins more than makes up for it.
Dislikes:
& Lazy People - Especially lazy people he works with. They make his job harder, and he doesn't like complaining about them to the boss.
& Scary Russians - Oh dear.
& Bad Literature - Bad literature makes Toris angry. Hey, he enjoys the brutal murder mystery as much as any person, which isn't to imply anything - but browsing through the shelves of libraries or bookstores and finding nothing but nonsense is quite frustrating. Especially when you are a writer yourself.
& Shopping - This is not so much a dislike, but something he really doesn't like doing. It's boring, and hunting for deals, while a necessity, is quite stressful for him. Toris tries to keep his possessions as clean as possible, and always working, so that he does not have to replace them. His clothing is always neat and never dirty for this reason, combined with the fact that looking professional is always helpful.
& Chess - And other board games. For some reason, he is just very bad at them. Toris hasn't lost every game he's played, but he might as well have. His record is atrocious. Playing boardgames is something he never wants to do.
& Vulgarity - It is not something Toris is overly familiar with it. He does not like crude jokes or swear words. They are unprofessional, and generally unpleasant. They're ugly.
Personality:
Toris, may seem like an introvert at first glance. A nice, constantly smiling man, but an introvert nonetheless. The truth is, he is simply shy, a bad trait that grew while he was working when he was younger. He discovered that no one wanted a maid that was outspoken and chatty, so he strived to be silent around his employers. This trait carried over to his personal life. He's working on it. Somewhat. Toris goes out of his way to be a kind, caring person, but this can end up with him being taken advantage sometimes.
Toris can vary from being a hopeless romantic to being the most depressing realist in the world quickly.
When it comes to things like love and romance, he is naive and blissfully ignorant of the way things really work. When he was younger, he tended to read romance novels when he had time, and although he doesn't do this anymore, the plots and characters affected his viewpoint of romance greatly. This is probably why he thinks he has a chance with that one lady he saw in Belarus, despite not having seen her in ages. It's fate, he tells himself, and they were meant to be, therefore they'll meet again.
But when it comes to things other than romance, why, he's so depressing he'll give anyone within a 25 mile radius a stomachache and teary eyes. This makes him a realist in his eyes, and this view makes him plan for everything like a mad man. He has plotted out his life, and does not want to spend more time working as a maid than necessary. He has ambitions, several of them. They are so intricately planned that they cannot help but work. As for unexpected events and happenings, Toris is a man well-adapted for change, so he knows how to make things like this work for him.
History:
Toris Laurinaitis was born in a small town in Lithuania, to parents who wanted him to grow up to be something influential and important. His mother would often talk to him of the ancestors he had that were nobility, heavily linked to the Polish and Russians, but lost after several unfortunate events involving marriage to the wrong people and a rebellious streak in a great-great-great-etc. grandparent. Although he saw that becoming a noble again would be quite the impossible task, Toris did want to succeed, in whatever way he could. In school, he kept his grades up, and took a number of odd hjobs, wanting to save his money.
After finishing school in Lithuania, he travelled around Europe a bit, taking on other odd jobs, and finally applied to many universities with a good reputation. He was accepted to one in Switzerland, and speedily went to the country to learn. He is now almost done being a student at the particular school, and now has his eyes on medical school, for he wants to become a doctor. Jobs like working here was just one of the many ways he saved money and tried to become suited to working to Switzerland (like learning languages used in the country. He is now fluent in Lithuanian, English and French, and is learning German).
Roleplay Sample:
(Will be short because I am feeling lazy at the moment. It is from his past.)
Toris looked up for a moment. His desk was uncharacteristically messy; various papers and textbooks spread out, and for the time, he did not care. A book of German conjugations in front of him, with several worksheets half filled in. It was quite fascinating, he thought, but complicated. Not organized enough for him. Too many exceptions to too many rules for his liking, but then again, what language wasn't like this?
However, it was time for a break.
Toris got up, casually yawning. He stretched his arms, being stiff from the long amount of time he had spent sitting. Toris was tired, and wanted nothing more than to take a nap. That would be nice, but he didn't have an alarm clock, and didn't want to risk the chance of sleeping in.
No. He would go for a walk, instead. And where to? Luckily, the employer's house was in the centre of the city, so everything that was somewhat interesting was a small walk away. Toris didn't want to fall asleep, so seeing the bright lights flashing in such an attractive manner, he walked to the casino. It was a handsome building, and Toris noted that it must have been made to draw tourists in.
Already he had heard complaints from the citizens, speaking of its vulgarity. However, Toris did not agree with this; this casino wasn't vulgarity, it merely tried too hard to be fancy. This passed for vulgarity here. He hoped they did not think him crude.
Inside, it was just as fancy. Toris walked straight to the tables for poker and other card games. The slot machines did not appeal to him. Too much based on luck, and besides, it was such a pain to get the seniors making love to the machines to leave. What a bore! The tables were much less crowded, and always such a large variety of people attempting to hide their feelings and have some fun.
