Personality:
Although Berwald’s mind consists of a million thoughts running about, he is usually a very quiet and reserved man. The reason for this is that he has always had trouble expressing himself, often growing very embarrassed in himself. Despite his antisocial nature, he has also always had trouble socializing due to the rigid looks he had been born with. Although he may seem a tough person to socialize with, Berwald is actually very playful by nature. It is because he is stiff and antisocial that very few people have been able to see this playful side of him. He is a very tolerant being by nature, however, he does lose his temper when he believes he has been pushed past his boundaries by far too much.
History:
Berwald was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He grew up an obedient child for the most part, until his preteens. It was then that he was sent to boarding school in Denmark, away from home. Although he was a kind child by nature, Berwald grew agitated by the constant rules that tied him down at the academy in Denmark, and eventually ran away from the boarding school late one night.
As a teenager, Berwald was extremely rough. He was still quiet and aloof, yet he got into quarrels quite frequently and caused a lot of problems for himself, making a few bad relationships with others in his environment.
It was when he started to enter adulthood that he finally calmed down, growing bored in the constant arguments that he had involved himself in as he grew more mature.
Because he wanted to prove that he could be an independent man and fend for himself, Berwald returned to Stockholm, where he decided to reconstruct his lifestyle.
He wanted to work by himself, to provide for himself. Although he had never worked a day of his life before, Berwald aimed to do his best, and worked various part-time jobs before finally settling down as a carpenter’s apprentice.
Berwald hadn’t known back then, but woodworking would soon become a major part of his life. He had not taken up the job because he wanted to work; He took it because a co-worker had mentioned it and he had figured he could use the extra money.
Berwald found that he had grown a strong affection towards woodworking. He enjoyed building furniture out of all the extravagant types of wood. He loved being in the middle of one of his pieces. He would pound the hammer away, letting it drown out all the thoughts that ran through his mind.
Berwald planned to work as an apprentice for another year. It was at this time that Berwald’s employer had received an unbelievable stroke of luck. A sudden increase in business had caused the company to expand even internationally.
As someone who had been there from the start of the company’s prosperity, Berwald became very committed to his work. His thoughts became filled with the well-being of the company and the company only.
It was Berwald’s excessive care over his work that triggered his stay at Resort Du Luche in the Swiss alps. He had been sent, if not forced, on a vacation by his employer to let go of the stress that had evidently started to build within his head as a result of his constant working.
Although Berwald felt he did not require a vacation, he hesitantly accepted his employer’s offer; he had insisted and refused to take no for an answer. Berwald was to stay at the ski resort for a couple of weeks against his own will. Little did he know that he would also be running into the company of a certain Danish man, a business associate of his from a neighbouring company, much to his displeasure.
[^ Only because I vaguely recall Denmark mentioning something about being business partners for the history section on the chatbox? Well, I wasn’t really sure, but if it doesn’t work, please tell me so I can change it! ><]
Roleplay Sample:
Berwald stared down at the slope before him. It was amazing how such a tiny hill looked so much steeper from the top. He frowned. The long white path in front of him looked intimidatingly long.
Truth be told, this was Berwald’s first time snowboarding. He had just never attempted to give it a try, even though there was plenty snow in his homeland.
Going down the bunny slope was embarrassing enough for Berwald. He was glad he had lost his partner, who had quickly scurried off to a higher slope with his snowboard tucked under his arm, unaware that Berwald hadn’t been following him. The Dane would surely laugh at him if he found out he had never snowboarded or skied a day in his life. There was no reason to give him yet another thing to tease Berwald about.
He took in a deep breath, trying to ignore the fact that his body was attempting to negotiate with his mind, telling himself to just walk the rest of the way down.
No. He wouldn’t be able to deal with that. The last thing he wanted was for his obnoxiously loud associate to make fun of him the whole vacation.
His mind was ready to go. His body, however, remained frozen in place. A hand clapped on his stuff shoulder, and he turned around to face a man wearing a bright orange jacket.
“You been standing there for twenty minutes now,” he said, “you okay?”
Berwald answered with a grunt followed by a small nod.
“Well, don’t stay up here forever,” the ski patrol murmured, turning around. “Oh, and if you’re interested, there’s a new employee giving snowboarding lessons over there.” He pointed at a young blonde man standing nearby and walked away.
Berwald stared at the man, then gazed down at the slope again. He slowly unlatched his boots off the board and trudged over to the employee.
“I’d like ta take th’lessons,” he grunted.
