Personality:
At first glance, most people find Ludwig unapproachable and downright scary. They see him as the most perfect example of a stoic and sometimes wonder if he even has emotions (apart from the occasional bout of anger). But that’s only because they don’t know the whole story.
It’s true that Ludwig is something of an introvert. He relishes the few moments he has to himself and can often be seen hidden away his apartment with only a book and a beer for company. And, honestly, he never had a problem with it. He was always comfortable with himself and who he is, and he doesn’t really care what others think of him.
But that isn’t his only side. With the proper coaxing and lots of alcohol, it’s possible to bring out Ludwig’s wild side. But he tries not to slip up in that respect too often. After all, he would rather be in control of his own actions, thank you. However, he doesn’t always require alcohol to have fun, considering that his idea of fun is not getting completely drunk and vandalizing his workplace or other nearby objects.
Ludwig always seeks to perform to his full potential, so he always tries his best to do well in his work, especially when he was just starting out and didn’t know much about the “real world.” He is also easily irritated when he feels others are not performing to their full potentials, and that often leads to the unnecessary conflicts he so hates. His tendencies as a perfectionist are also applied to other aspects of his life, sometimes to a fault. He always tries to “protect the order,” which often leads to others fearing him when he does.
He is also very protective of those he cares about. If anyone even thinks of hurting someone under his care, well, let’s just say he has the muscle power to back up any threats he might make. He tries to avoid unnecessary conflict, but he will not allow harm to come to the people he loves.
The ‘people he loves.’ They’re the only thing holding back the loneliness from Ludwig. After all, who wouldn’t become lonely if feared unnecessarily, as Ludwig often is? Still, even with those few he truly cares for, he always felt as though there was a hole in his heart, a hole that he is now allowing those close to him to fill, because they’re good people, and they care. So Ludwig cares, too.
History:
Ludwig grew up in a small town in Germany with his older brother and his parents, though they both died when he was very young. After that, although they were technically adopted by their uncle, it was really Gilbert who raised him. Considering that, Ludwig sometimes wonders how he ended up the way he did. But then again, Gilbert always did pay special attention to Ludwig’s academic pursuits, like any good brother/parent.
He always found it odd that Gilbert hated the cold so much, yet still loved snowboarding. It was a bit of a paradox, but Ludwig just shrugged it off as yet another of his brother’s idiosyncrasies. Ludwig himself didn’t mind the cold at all, so he took up skiing so that he and his brother would share a hobby (he would have tried snowboarding, but some of the tricks Gilbert did on the slopes looked far too dangerous).
At age 18, Ludwig moved to Switzerland to attend a college with a good pre-med program in order to pursue a career in Sports Medicine. However, as neither he nor his brother was particularly wealthy (not that he would have asked Gilbert for money, anyway), he took out a few student loans to help him make tuition payments. Unfortunately, he would need to pay those back after graduation, so he began searching for a job. He quickly found one at the nearby resort, which needed a ski instructor, and he has been working there for two years.

“And I also need to go to Canned Goods and fix those, because I do not like how precariously those cans are placed…” Ludwig ran through his mental checklist as he walked briskly through the aisles, trying both to take care of his own work and to fix everyone else’s. He blamed Lovino for the precariously placed cans. Yes, perhaps it was a bit biased of him, but the disorganization just reeked of him. Ludwig supposed he ought to just let it go, but he was a bit irritated, because he did not need to make any extra work for himself, especially since his shift in the Pet Department started in…
Beep!
“Scheiße!” Ludwig swore under his breath as he glanced at his watch, which was responsible for the annoying noise. Of course, he’d bought this particular watch specifically for the alarm. It was ugly as sin, but it did help keep him organized. “It’s one-thirty already? Verdammt, I can’t be late on my first day…” His steps increased in pace as he tied off the loose ends from this shift (the cans would have to wait) and headed over to Pets.
“You need something?” Ludwig barely suppressed a gasp of surprise as a man materialized behind him, shooting him a who-do-you-think-you-are glare, so reminiscent of Lovino. Verdammt, he thought he’d escaped Lovino. Oh, well.
“Yes, sir,” he replied. “My name is Ludwig Beilschmidt, and I’m supposed to start here today-” He meant to continue, but it appeared that wasn’t necessary.
“Gil’s brother, right?” the man said, scowl suddenly replaced by a smile. “C’mon, then, your shift starts in five minutes.” Ludwig followed behind him as the man continued, “Can’t tell you how glad I am that somebody’s here to keep him in check; he’s kind of a nightmare sometimes, y’know?”
Ludwig’s mouth tilted up slightly in a barely-there smile. “Believe me, I know.” And with that, he stepped into his first day of work in the Pet Department…and his first Gilbert-induced disaster to remedy…
